Do You Have Resistance To Persistence?

We've all heard people say you've 'got to be persistent' to make change. 

I say it all the time "You need to be consistent to be persistent.

What most people mean though is that you have to just push through the barriers, push through the obstacles, maybe bludgeon your way through or into something. 

And even if that's not what you mean when you encourage someone to be persistent, that's what they hear. 

Why? 

Because if you have to encourage someone to be persistent, then it most likely means they've been at something for a while and they're not seeing the evidence that they were expecting to see that indicates they're making headway. 

They feel like they're running into a head-wind when what they'd like to feel is the help of a tail-wind

Being persistent feels like you're pushing against defeat, that if you give up your persistent effort, defeat will come in and sweep you away. 

WHAT'S THE MEANING OF ALL THIS? 

The meaning of persistence is; enduring tenacity, constantly, repeatedly, unrelenting, persisting especially in spite of opposition, obstacles and discouragement. 

No wonder we feel tired when we think of being persistent. 

Persistence is required to get through and beyond resistance. 

Yet we have resistance to persistence. 

Because we feel persistence is hard, we feel that it's going to take effort. 

Would it be helpful to you to think of persistence in a different way? 

Would it be helpful to you to be able to think of persistence and associate it with ease and flow? 

PERSISTENCE IS SIMPLY 

  • Following through
  • Following up
  • An intention followed by an action
  • Being steadfast
  • Staying true
  • Being attentive
  • Being an eager beaver
  • To plod along
  • Being conscientious
  • To accomplish
  • To carry on, carry out, carry through
  • Maintain course
  • Make progress
  • Being interested
  • Dropping things back into 2nd gear, hitting the accelerator and feeling that surge forward 

And persistence might lead you to...... 

  • Meeting new people
  • Having a new (winning) idea
  • Discovering something new and interesting
  • Feeling accomplished
  • Feeling achievement
  • Finding opportunity
  • Feeling strong
  • Feeling relaxed
  • Feeling empowered
  • Helping others
  • Sleeping well
  • Being victorious
  • Feeling invigorated 

And then you discover that..... 

  • It's possible to have a happy disposition and achieve
  • You are the master of you
  • You can change your outlook
  • You've built resilience
  • You're capable of so much more than you thought
  • There's so many ways to do things
  • There's some truly lovely people out there
  • That you can achieve and succeed 

Change the way you think about something and you change the way you feel about it. 

When you change the way you feel about something you reinforce the new way you think about it. 

When you reinforce the way you think and feel about something you change your beliefs

When you change your beliefs, you change relationship to the world around you. 

And if all those thoughts and feelings have been uplifting, positive ones, then when you change your relationship to the world around you, new doors open up to you and you see and experience things you never thought were possible.
