It's trendy to be a coach isn't it?

May 27, 2022

I met a person recently who asked what I do for a living. When I told them I’m a weight loss coach and that I help my clients overcome weight loss obstacles, they said “Oh, you’re a coach, that’s really the trend now isn’t it, being a life coach of sorts.”

It wasn’t until later that I realised why that would be the perception of some, that there’s a trend, a band wagon that people jump onto, it happens every day doesn’t it?

And I realised that it was fair for them to make that comment as they don’t know what’s gone on behind the scenes for me to actually be a weight loss coach.

They wouldn’t know that the idea germinated back in 2012 after I lost 25kgs in 2011 using a program I developed and that at that time the only thing I knew how to do was to coach, train and mentor.

I’d never owned a business, I knew zero about sales, marketing, social media, building websites, writing blogs, networking and all the other many many aspects of starting and running a business and I had to start from scratch! I didn’t have a curriculum, there was no blueprint to follow, mind you, there were hundreds of people selling product they said was what I wanted, but what they were selling was only ever one piece of a business puzzle. The problem was they were just selling their product, which they did really well, but they weren’t interested in finding what I actually needed and if what they had was what I needed then or later. That was great education for me about what kind of sales person I wanted to be and how I sold my products

So from that tiny acorn of an idea through to actually launching a business in 2017 I invested over 6,124 hours of time just to get to a stage where I thought I was able to launch the business – which at that point still didn’t actually have a proper business name.

They also wouldn’t know that between 2017 and now, I’ve invested a further 11,221 hours, and none of that includes the 100’s of hours spent reading and listening to audio books, researching, and the constant thinking about brand positioning, how to create a product and services suite and the myriad of other concepts that I’ve had to get my head around. Not to mention that I’ve done the majority of those hours around the other work that I’ve had to do keep a roof over my head and food on the table.

Getting up at 3 – 4am so I can work for me before I go to work at my day job is my norm as is coming home and jumping in for the night shift. I wake up thinking about Dietless Living; I go to bed thinking about it. Why? Because I’m so into it! This is the best job I’ve ever ever had and I love the constant development of working out, and getting through, all the learning curves – what an adventure, what a challenge!

So yes, I am a coach, I’m not sure if it’s a trendy thing to do but I’ve dedicated the last 10 years of my life to it and planning on dedicating the next 40 as well.

You really do have to love what you create.
