Why do you need to create mental, emotional and physical relaxation?

Today is Stress Awareness Day.

So let’s talk a little about what stress really is and why it's so important to find time daily to rest & relax.

There’s situational/acute stress which occurs when you think, “I have to solve this problem or something bad is going to happen.”

Situational/acute stress can cause short-term mental, emotional, physical and behavioural symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, irritability, anger, and changes in sex drive, sleep problems, inability to focus and be productive, nausea, feeling overwhelmed, and an inability to relax and indigestion. It also leads to emotional and over eating and the use of drugs and alcohol to soothe raw emotional states. 

Then there is chronic stress - Chronic stress can impair brain function and reduce the size of your brain, it can cause serious mental, emotional and physical health problems – the big 3 (heart attack, stroke and cancer) are all linked to chronic stress along with depression, anxiety, digestive issues, fatigue, and drug, alcohol and food abuse. It can cause social withdrawal and affect your ability to connect with others in deep and meaningful ways. Long term stress can disrupt and compromise almost all of your body’s processes & functions.

Stress and tension keep your body in the fight of flight, survival mode, releasing adrenaline and cortisol constantly into your system.
 
With stress and tension driving you’re impulsive behaviours, including your eating habits, patterns and behaviours, it’s easy to see why just changing the food you eat won’t stop you’re eating habits from returning to you again and again and again.

Finding ways to rest and relax throughout the day is a crucial step in changing your health,  happiness and well-being habits along with your eating habits.

All stress affects your mind and body; you’re thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
