This Isn’t About Gratitude Journals and Positive Vibes!

Apr 18, 2025

Let’s talk about return on investments.

Not the financial kind, the happiness kind.

DOES HAPPINESS HAVE AN R.O.I.?

Yes.

When we’re happy, we:

❤️ Make clearer, faster decisions without spiralling into overthinking

❤️ Take better care of our health, energy, and relationships, without forcing it

❤️ Attract better outcomes because we show up open, calm, and solution-focused

❤️ Handle setbacks with more resilience and less reactivity

❤️ Create momentum - because action taken from joy is more sustainable than action taken from pressure

What else happens when we feel happy?

❤️ When you feel good, you naturally want to eat in a way that matches how you feel light, colourful, vibrant

❤️ You naturally feel inclined to move more which helps you sleep deeper, and speak more kindly - because you’re more connected to yourself.

A happy person isn’t running on survival, they’re living in a state of synergy

WHAT DIVIDENDS CAN YOU EXPECT FROM HAPPINESS?

✔️ Mental clarity: less inner criticism means more brain space for what matters

✔️ Easier habit change: you're not constantly battling the urge to self-soothe or escape

✔️ Better self-talk: you can talk yourself into healthy habits instead of out of them

✔️ Higher resilience: stress doesn’t hit as hard when you're anchored in a good state

✔️ Momentum: happy choices create more happy outcomes, compounding over time

The thing that trips us up though is we think happiness is the reward of achieving our goals and ambitions.

It’s not though.

Happiness is the strategy that helps you get there.

5 Things People Don’t Know About Being Happy

  1. It’s not a personality trait - it’s a skill.
Happiness isn’t reserved for the optimistic few. It’s something you can build and strengthen, like a muscle.

  2. You don’t have to fix your life first.
Most people wait for circumstances to change before they allow happiness in. But it works the other way around, happiness changes your circumstances.

  3. Your nervous system is wired to resist it.
Safety, not joy, is its priority. So it defaults to familiar worry rather than unfamiliar peace. That’s why contentment can feel strange - even unsafe - at first.

  4. It requires micro-decisions.
Small, daily choices: choosing wonder over worry, rest over rumination, curiosity over criticism. That’s where happiness lives.

  5. It’s not about being positive all the time.
Real happiness holds room for the hard stuff. But instead of the hard stuff being the focus, happiness is found in turning your gaze to what you can do about the hard stuff and to improve your situation.

HOW DO YOU SHIFT AND RELIEVE THE TENSION NOW?

Here are three places to start:

  1. List out proactive things you can do to one situation: Whether it’s a finances, relationships, food obsession, work problems or health, sit down and brainstorm as many solutions you can think of. Then have a look at what you wrote, there will be something you can do today that will be a step forward and relieve some tension.

  2. Stop outsourcing your peace to other people.
You don’t need others to behave better for you to feel better. We are all just people having the same problems. We can’t control other people, lord knows we try, but if we loosen the ratchet, and let them off the hook, we free ourselves up as well. This doesn’t mean you accept bad behaviour, but it does mean that you accept that we are all doing the best we can and we never know what is going on in other peoples lives that is leaking out all over you. To do this, breathe slower, speak softer, move your body, release your own tension. The energy you bring shifts the dynamics you’re in.

  3. Do the helpful thing before the hard thing.
Before you deal with the inbox, the bills, the fight you had last night – drink some water, go for a walk, do a 5-minute savasana or write down what you actually want. When your nervous system is settled, your actions have more positive power.

So, as Easter rolls in…

Maybe skip the pressure of a ‘perfect’ weekend.

Instead, choose what feels kind to your mind, gentle to your body, and warming to your heart, and enjoy the return on your investment in yourself through the happiness you will feel.
