What could you do if you have the power to change your health?

Feb 23, 2024

Recently I watched a documentary on obese teenagers and the many struggles they have in breaking free from the cycle. It was heartbreaking on so many levels, for them and their families as they all do their best to bring about change and save their lives.

So much of their struggle rang true with me and I could empathize with them on the level that knowing what not to eat does not stop us wanting to eat it and that will power alone will never concur wanting over the long-haul.

I also related to the denial that allows the weight to escalate un-noticed.

I’ve written about this before, we make adjustment after adjustment so we don’t see that we’re gaining

  • We stop getting on the scales
  • We adjust our belts one notch at a time
  • We wear looser clothing
  • We wear the same sets of clothes

I always hated the bathroom scales, and gave them too much power over my happiness

Until I realised I was asking them for the wrong information.

Instead of asking them to tell me how much weight I was losing when I was on a diet, I should have been using them every day to tell me how much weight I was putting on!

The brain is a tricky thing and it used to always befuddle me how I could gain 20kg without noticing?

Yes, you heard me right…I could put on 20kg’s without noticing!

Maybe you’ve had the same experience?

Well, here’s the answer, and it’s a ridiculously simple one too……

It happens because we simply stop stepping on the bathroom scales when we don’t like what they tell us.

Instead of using the information in a constructive way i.e.; take note of what’s happening and make small adjustments to our diet and body movement that very day. We ignore the information; we dismiss it and brush it off. And when the scales repeatedly tell us that our weight is going up, we simply just stop stepping on them.

The most effective way to use bathroom scales is to;

  • Step on them every day
  • Understand that your body weight fluctuates depending on a variety of variables, everything from how late, and what you ate, for dinner the night before, whether you poo’d enough the day before, along with hormonal changes and fluid retention.
  • Know your average body weight outside of those fluctuations
  • Pay attention when your body weight increases
  • Make adjustments to your food intake and body movement that very day and start steering yourself back in the right direction

Scales are not the bearers of good news or bad news. They just provide a number. It’s up to us to decide if seeing the increase is good or bad. I say it’s good because it’s better to know, right?
