I was in my 40s, working full time, running a household and doing the do that every “respectable 40 year old” does. Getting pulled in every direction and believing that was how it should be.
I was knackered and felt like I was being tossed around in a washing machine most days.
I really wanted to do things on the weekend, you know, start a hobby, see friends, stay connected but instead my weekends were taken up with all of lifes admin and recovering from the week and preparing for the next one.
It’s sad when what we’re looking forward to on the weekend is sleeping and watching TV!
I was really struggling to live the life I wanted to live and feeling the pinch that I was actually middle aged now! Crikey, where did that time go!?
I thought if I could just lose the weight for a final time, if I could get that burden off my shoulders then I would have a shot at the rest and then I could be happy!
The problem was I had already tried everything to reach that goal! And after 25 years of repeatedly stepping up to the mark and giving anything and everything a red hot go, I still didn’t understand why I kept falling back into the same old patterns?
I realised on NYE 2011, as I prepared to make another resolution, that if I was going to reclaim my life, I’d have to reclaim my habits and that meant I’d have to reclaim how I thought, felt and dealt with the people, places and situations in my life!
It was time to take back control!

What’s not simple is breaking down the invisible architecture that holds your habits in place.
I wondered why I would always end up with food in my mouth when I’d sworn that wasn't going to happen – again! But time after time, on a whole range of habits, I’d find myself arguing with myself over what the “new improved” part of me wanted to do and the other, much older version of me said we were going to do.
As Jimmy Barnes sang in I’m Still On Your Side: “You can’t win a fight you don’t understand.”

I spent all of 2011 unpacking everything I’d learned since 1986 (when I ballooned from the size 10 I’d always been to a size 16) about the brain, the nervous system, habits and behaviours and why we do the things we swore we’d stop doing.
Then I gathered all the strategies and techniques I had trailed and pulled out all the ones that had been successful, even if only for a few months. Then I looked for the patterns of success, why they worked and how to make them work for longer.
Then I created a plan of implementation and before I knew it, a year had passed and:
